Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel also known as The Iron Man of India is a dynamic and very powerful Indian Freedom Fighter. He made an active contribution to Indian Freedom Struggle.

Birth and Personal Life

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel born on 31st October 1875 in Nadiad Village of Gujarat. His full name was Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel. Sardar Patel was a very clever character by childhood.

Jhaverbhai Patel was his father, who served in the army under the Jhansi Queen. And Ladbai was his mother who was inclined towards spiritually. Moreover, Vithalbhai Patel was his elder brother and only one sibling, who was an Indian Legislator, Political Leader and The Co-founder of Swaraj Party.

Furthermore, Jhaverbha Patel was The Spouse of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. As well as, he had two children, a Daughter – Maniben Patel, and a Son – Dahyabhai Patel. His Daughter Maniben Patel was an Indian Independence Movement Activist and an Indian Parliament Member.

His son Dahyabhai Patel was also an Indian Member of Parliament.

Education and Early Life

Sardar Patel started his Academic Career in Gujarati Medium School, but later shifted to and English Medium School. In addition, Sardar Patel ji finished his University-Entry or Matriculation at the age of 22. That’s why, everyone thought that he would do a simple job.

He continued his studies and became a Law Graduate. Later on, for becoming a Barrister moved to England in 1910. Patel finished his Law Degree in 1913 from Inns of Court and returned to India.

He continued to practice law in Ahmedabad of Gujarat, after coming back to India.

Contributions

A meeting with Mahatma Gandhi in October 1917 brought him much closer to India’s Independence Movement. He joined Indian National Congress and put his steps in Satyagraha in Gujarat against British Recidivism.

After that, he actively volunteered and participated in Quit India Movement in 1942 and contiguously worked with Gandhiji. Sardar Patel ji had a very remarking contribution in uniting and motivating the Indians at The Time of India’s Freedom Struggle.

The British jailed him several times during this period, but cannot touch or hurt his strong determination. His first and only objective was filling The Feeling of Patriotism in everyone and Removal of British from Our Motherland India.

Sardar Patel’s Life has been a motivating and inspiring one. Firstly, he achieved his legendary goals himself with very little support of others. Secondly, he played a major, vital and conclusive role for every Indian to fight for India’s Independence.

His firm believe on the principle of standing unitedly for the India’s freedom, in other words “Unity in Diversity” made him The Iron Man of India. The Title of Sardar Patel, meaning Leader Patel has given to him, because of his dynamic leadership qualities and abilities for connecting masses and communities.

Protests and Campaigns

Firstly, Sardar Vallabhbhai led The Massive “No Tax Campaign” that requested to the farmers not for paying the taxes to the British after the flood in Kairana. This peaceful and non-violence movement forced the British to give back the land taken by the farmers.

Due to his efforts for joining the farmers, brought to him the title of Sardar. In 1928, again he did the same criteria and brought justice to farmers.

Vallabhbhai Patel was one of the leaders imprisoned due to his participation in the well-known Movement “Salt Satyagraha” started by Mahatma Gandhi. His motivating speeches during the movement modified the point of view of many, which further helped in making the campaign successful.

Upon the Congress requests, when Gandhiji was in imprisonment, he led the movement across the Gujarat. When British imprisoned Sardar Patel, Bapu freed him in 1931. In the same year, he was elected as The President of Indian National Congress.

Also, he supported in Quit India Movement in 1942.

Awards and Honours

  • In 1991, Bharat Ratna, The India’s Highest Civilian Award had given to Vallabhbhai Patel.
  • In 2014, The Sardar Patel’s Birthday on 31st October declared as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, National Unity Day.
  • The Statue of Unity, The World’s Tallest Statue was made in love and affinity of The Iron Man of India in 2018.

Life after India’s Independence

After India got independence, he played an eminent part in India’s unification. He persuaded some rulers of princely states, remote areas and border areas to become the participant of “One India — One nation, by travelling there and his good communication skills.

After independence, he was firstly appointed as The First Home Minister of India, as well as The Commander in Chief of Indian Armed Forces. Later on, he also became The First Deputy Prime Minister of India.

Death

Vallabhbhai Patel is listed among those three dynamic leaders of India who led our country from 1947 — 1950. He began to get severely unwell from the summer of 1950. Then, he felt that he was not going to live much longer.

His health began to get even worse and had to stay on the bed by 2nd November 1950. At last, he died on 15th December 1950 at Birla House in Bombay (now Mumbai) of Maharashtra, India, at the age of 75, due to a severe Heart Attack.

Vallabhbhai Patel’s Contribution to India’s Freedom Struggle is matchless and remarkable. He was a grand source of inspiration and motivation for the nationwide youth, not only while the independence movement, but also in the present day.

Truly, he was termed as The Self-made Man (Swayambhu Purush). His thoughts of Unity laid The Foundation of Integration.
